For decades now, up until this very day, we have experienced and endured the consequences of ineffective and neglectful leadership at all levels of government. And the devastating effects are far-reaching, especially in this regions’ majority Black communities.
In the absence of effective leadership advocating, fighting for and delivering authentic economic development and job opportunities, poverty levels have continued to worsen.
This lack of economic support will continue to trap families in cycles of hardship, making it impossible to break free from generational poverty. Lip service and social media posts depicting progress can no longer be tolerated.
This neglectful leadership has led to underfunded schools and inadequate educational resources in the communities that need it the most. This results in poor educational outcomes, limiting opportunities for youth and perpetuating inequality.
Access to quality healthcare is essential for thriving communities. Ineffective leadership has led to inadequate healthcare facilities and services for the region’s most in need communities, resulting in poorer health outcomes and higher rates of chronic diseases.
Under most current leaders’ basic infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, public transportation, and housing has deteriorated without proper commitment, attention, maintenance, and investment.
This not only affects the quality of life but has also hinder economic growth, stability and development by neglectfully depreciating and lowering the value of these communities to the lowest common denominator possible.
Therefore, making them ripe and easy pickings for outside gentrifies, handpicked developers, and others within the dominant culture seeking to exploit and take advantage of our region’s most vulnerable communities by declaring that they are the only saviors.
While crime may be dropping overall across the city and country, further examination of the data will reveal that neglected communities are experiencing higher violent crime rates and homicides due to lack of opportunities and resources.
Ineffective and neglectful leadership has exacerbated this by failing to implement effective crime prevention and intervention strategies. Right along with some of their outright refusal to allocate, or ability on how to access County, State and Federal funding.
With recent past and current leaders failing to address community needs, the trust in government and public institutions continues to erode by the second. In the past this has led to disengagement and apathy, making it even harder to drive positive change.
But now it is also leading to anger, frustration and calls for Political Change. Now is the perfect time for young folks to step up and take the lead, instead of being complicit in their own demise.
The lack of committed representation and advocacy has led to feelings of disenfranchisement and marginalization. This has diminished community cohesion and spirit, making it harder for residents to unite and advocate for their rights and needs.
Current leadership continues to overlook the dire housing crisis and concerns for the most in need communities here in the region, leading to deplorable and unsafe living conditions. Recently leading to the tragic outcome of a Presious two (2) year old.
Addressing these issues requires strong, committed, and effective leadership that is closest to the pain, struggle, and reality.
New leaders who understand and will authentically advocate for the needs of our region’s most neglected communities, instead of using their positions to advance their own personal aspirations or social status.
At this critical point in the region history, it is essential to foster new leadership, sustainable development, and create a future for all residents.
Encouraging young Black people to run for elected office in our regions most neglected and left behind communities is essential. Representation Matters!!
When elected officials reflect the reality and lived experience of their communities, they are more likely to understand and address the unique challenges faced by those communities. Young Black leaders can bring fresh perspectives and solutions that resonate with their constituents.
Young folks seeing peers step up to lead can inspire others to get involved and believe in their own potential to have influence. This fosters a sense of empowerment, unity, and collective responsibility.
Decades of neglect and impoverishment result from systemic issues and a lack of advocacy. Young Black leaders can prioritize policies and initiatives that directly address these issues, working towards equity and justice for their own communities, first.
When communities have authentic, competent, and committed leaders who are genuinely invested in their well-being, it can lead to more effective and sustainable development.
This can transcend into the creation of alternative Black owned and controlled education structures, healthcare systems, housing markets, startups, superior community infrastructure, and self-sustaining economic opportunities.
By stepping into leadership roles, young Black individuals can pave the way for future generations. They can create a legacy of change, showing that progress is possible and that their communities are worth fighting for.
Instead of following the lead of others or trying to save a world that have left them, their families, their children, their communities, and probable future generations at the very bottom of American society.
Encouraging young Black people to run for office is about more than just filling seats—it is about cultivating competent, knowledgeable, and committed leaders. It’s about Transforming communities and ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping their future. It’s about fighting for and securing vital government funding.
